The new branch of the Victoria and Albert Museum in Dundee is worth a detour as they say in the Michelin Guide. In fact all you need to do is take a train from Edinburgh and an hour later you are on the seaside directly across from the museum.  Kengo Kuma, an architectural favorite of mine in Japan is here more lugubrious. The building sits directly adjacent to one of the Shackleton crewed vessels to Antartica which puts its massiveness in harsh relief. The exterior is made up of what looks like concrete louvers and the interior mirrored in wooden louvered elements. The excellent restaurant overlooks the water, but there is not enough access to the water from the rest of the building. Still I am happy for it’s airy interior and well thought out exhibition spaces.

The V and A has sent a selection of things all housed in one permanent collection, and if you love the V and A London the way I do—for its ability to go deep into every topic, this will appear a bit thin. There is a focus on all things Scottish naturally. The excellent national museums of Scotland are all free, and have some very rich collections which overlap with this. What is spectacular is their current show on Videogames, amazingly installed, colorful, engaging, even from a luddite like me. An important part of the exhibition is about how women gamers are ascendant, and how different they approach the medium.  Any parent with a child who loves gaming should make their way to Dundee if possible, it's an interactive experience not to be missed. A great place to stay with a family is the new Staybridge Suite hotel which was housing the crew of the HBO series Succession now shooting scenes for their second season--at the V and A Dundee.
